"Don't let what you can't do stop you from doing what you can do..."
The above quote is from one of my favorite coaches of all time, former UCLA basketball coach, ''The Wizard of Westwood" John Wooden. I talk a lot about him throughout the year because he's kind of a hero of mine, even though, usually, I claim not to have any.
This quote, one of his more well known ones, got me thinking about the state of the world we live in, and how one day soon, it will be up to all of you to fix it. No pressure. :( But, if you even glance at the TV when the news is on, you know I speak truth.
We're in bad shape, and I am seriously doubting the world's so-called political leaders have a clue how to go about reversing the damage.
But, that's what I think is so great about kids. Your potential is limitless, your perspectives are fresh, and your souls aren't yet weary (I truly hope). All that simply means--if the world is going to change, it will be because you guys changed it.
Let's start with what you think is wrong. Maybe you think it's racism, maybe you think it's a propensity for violence, maybe you think it's ignorance, maybe you think it's sexism or poverty, or the fact that we've had the same 2-party political system for the past 200 years. Talk a little about what you think is truly wrong with the world. Think macro or microcosm (society at large, or Oakcrest society), and really tear into what needs to be changed and what, we, the adults in the room, did wrong. How could you, would you, should you, do it better or simply differently?
What you're doing is more than a blog posts, pumpkins. It's more than an assignment, more than a Genesis entry--this is your world and eventually your lives. Both of those things matter. Show me how much.

Racism, sexism, segregationists, ignorance, violence, carelessness, and the lack of drive that people have to change anything make the world a really awful place to be. The lack of acceptance and tolerance in the world is what drives me crazy. As humans we greatly lack humanity as a whole. We also lack respect and kindness. Maybe as warm blooded creatures we need coal in our hearts to warm up, but maybe we’re all just forgetting to light it leaving us to remain cold and calloused. I don’t understand how we can be made up of all the same components and still find ways to separate certain groups of people based on ethnicity, gender, sextuality, economic status, religion and plenty of other superficial things that don’t bear any real effect on anyone’s lives but the person who makes those decisions. I also don’t understand how people can support taking away the basic rights of other human beings. This is especially annoying because usually their beliefs aren’t harming anyone, unless they believe taking away basic humans rights is okay, in that case they are the problem. What needs to be changed in the way we view each other and respect each other. It is okay to agree to disagree. It is not okay to take away others freedoms. The best thing to do is to what what you say to people and to be courteous to them. If someone is being rude to you or trying to take away your freedoms don’t give the a reason to hate you more ny lashing out, try to explain your beliefs or that you can’t control how you feel or what you are. If someone continues to try to take your liberties, then walk away. If someone gets violent call for help. Instead of letting people walk over others, help that person up and stand up for them if they won’t do it themselves. I’m not saying you need to baby everyone in the world I’m saying that people in general need to stand firm in what they believe in, people who are trying to take other people's rights should educate themselves on the topic instead of believing whatever falsehoods that make them what to segregate others, and if someone is too weak to stand up for themselves we, as a unit, should help them out. It’s not rocket science, it’s humanity. People are going to struggle, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve help. People are going to be ignorant and racist and sexist and every other awful thing they can be, but that doesn’t mean we should encourage it. Respect is what the world needs as well as knowledge. If everyone cared about each other a little more and everyone was a little nice about half of the world's problems wouldn’t be as awful as they are or even exist.
ReplyDeleteThere’s more than a handful of things that are wrong with the world we live in; discrimination being a big one of them. Why do we still view others that are different from us, differently? It’s truly incredible. It should not matter whether you’re black, white, purple, indigo, male, female, gay or straight; each of us are an arrangement of 206 bones protected by skin. It blows my mind how race, sex, gender, religion, and sexual orientation affects the way we view and treat one another. Respect is another thing that seems to be absent in this world. There are so many videos going around of younger people disrespecting elders, and these videos end up going viral. I don’t understand this at all; weren’t we raised better? I feel as though adults today are not fully, but partly responsible for this. The negative discriminate posts/comments adolescents are putting on the internet are there for the world to see, yet parents of these children seem to miss it?
ReplyDeleteI do not want to turn this into an argumentative essay, although, a very big controversial topic going around is gun control. I feel that there definitely should be stricter gun control laws in the U.S. Guns are very dangerous objects which should not be allowed out on the streets. Using a gun to hunt or carrying a gun if you’re a cop is one thing, but if you aren't any of those things, why would you need a gun? U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that on an average day, 93 Americans are killed with guns. According to Johns Hopkins Center For Gun Policy And Research, the cost to fix/repair things destroyed by guns in the U.S. was estimated to be about $100 billion annually in 1998. That is one reason why people of the U.S. pay higher taxes. Gun control laws should be stricter for the fault of kids as well. Kids today are getting into their parent's firearms, and by watching the news or reading stories online, we know that some not so good results have come from that. The amount of people who are against making gun control laws stricter will defend their stance by saying that guns are used for self defense. Although, according to procon.org, "between 2007 to 2011, 0.79% of victims protected themselves with a threat of use or use of firearm." Therefore, a very low percentage of people actually protect themselves with the guns they have a license for. Also, if there were stricter gun control laws, the suicide rate in the U.S. would go down. According to procon.org, " between 1999 and 2013, there were 270, 237 suicides caused by the use of guns in the United States, accounting for 52% of all suicides during those years." All of these facts and statistics prove that gun control in the U.S. should be stricter, and I highly doubt that the man we are forced to refer to as our President will make that happen. I feel as though adults have a huge part in changing this, simply by teaching their children as they grow up that guns are bad. This big step in raising a child is skipped in most homes, which is part of the problem.
Instead of asking what's wrong with this world, ask yourself what's not wrong with this world. At large, this world is a pretty shitty place which is scary growing up in. I have tendencies of not watching the news because I don't want to hear the depressing situations happening around the world. I'm the type of person to hear something sad and literally feel my heart break. I want to hear about the good in the world. And not much good happens so, I’d rather just stay out of it. It depresses me that it’s 2017 and racism still exists. It bothers me that it’s 2017 and women don’t have 100% equal rights as men and that feminism has to be a thing. It bothers me how society is letting children be raised and how in 10 years those “children” will be the next generation of adults.
ReplyDeleteI don’t mean to sound like a feminist, I believe in equal rights for everyone but most males of today’s generation are extremely misogynistic, and society promotes it. In most of today’s rap, men are degrading women all the time. These rappers talk about sex with women, and how “women ain’t shit”, in songs. But because of these songs, boys think it’s okay to sing or say these things and do what these songs say to girls. It irritates me that women aren’t liked for genuine features like their personalities or specific qualities but the large majority of boys would rather date the girl with the big butt and the pretty face, or even because she’s “easy”. A lot of boys worry about “how many bitches they can have sex with” and without realizing they take advantage very easily, which is highly disgusting and a lot of men think like this. Although, because of this women/ girls are afraid to trust and this is why body shaming, and girls are being called name. This is the generation I’m growing up in and it’s such a horrible thing. As females we should be able to love ourselves with confidence and support each other without being brought down. Living in 2017, this is just going to get worse, with social media and the lack of respect. It’s almost as if we have to question “how can we stop this”, the answer, we won’t be able to, rap is too mainstream, and social media plays such a big role in this. Boys laugh at other boys when they do these things, and girls laugh too. All it takes is one person to stand up for another, or one person to tell them it’s not okay. To be the one to say something, to be the one to shut these “jokes” out, can change the mind of these actions. This happens in school and in front of teachers, yet the majority of them won’t do anything. So, even if it’s just me that thinks this is a problem, I will be the one to stop it anytime I see it.
What I think is wrong with this world is the way a lot of adults abuse their "authority" over us, or anyone adults are legally allowed to control. Yes, I understand that it's how the world works and such, but I absolutely HATE it when they go too far. An example of an adult using their rights of being an adult over a younger person in a good way would be a good parent protecting their child by making logical rules for them. But those can easily be manipulated to become ridiculous. A very bad example of an adult abusing their power is an adult who decides that they can make their child obey their every command by using their sense of authority over them. Because of that feeling alone, the child or younger person feels weak, helpless, and powerless.
ReplyDeleteI believe that adults (parents, specifically, but adults in general) do this to make themselves even more powerful. They have to put down the ones below them even farther to get stronger. I don't have all that much to say on this subject, and, honestly, I don't think there'd be a permanent resolve to this issue, seeing as there are plenty more perspectives on this, and it hurts my head just thinking about expanding on that problem.
There are so many things wrong with the world. Unfortunately all of our problems are due to each person’s mindset and thought process, both of which can’t be fixed all the time. Everyone has that one topic that they think they are right, they know they are right. When people try to tell them other wise it doesn’t work, even in the slightest. We all claim to be open minded but we can all think of one thing we don’t want to hear other opinions about. Being closed minded is the route of all problems, that and being ignorant. Being open minded doesn’t mean you can’t be firm on an opinion you have, it just means you’re willing to listen. It means that when people talk you listen and try to understand why they think a certain way. America really struggles with it everyone really struggles with it.If everyone was able to try to listen and be a little more open minded, people would start to see things different. Although it won’t fix every problem in the world but it could help people see things in a whole new way. There are so many different things wrong with the world too many to count. All these problems are caused simply by the way people think. We can’t change the way people think, we can only hope to make them think.
ReplyDeleteRacism I find to be a huge thing wrong with this world because even though it is not as big of an issue as it used to be it still effects many people. My father is Puerto Rican making me half Puerto Rican and even though Puerto Rico is a part of the United States some people still feel as though no matter what your ethnicity is inside of being hispanic, latino(a), or Spanish you are illegal. I have had a personal encounter with racism that really broke my heart on the inside. My friend and her boyfriend are both Trump supporters and I being not only hispanic but being a decent human being do not support Trump. One day this past summer I was hanging out with the two of them and out of no where her boyfriend says to me
ReplyDelete"Now that trump is president you can be deported."
I replied with " I'm not illegal, Puerto Rico is a part of the United States."
He says back to me "Oh so you are pretty much just a legal Mexican then"
Words can not explain the anger that came over me in that moment. I do not understand how someone even after being informed can still be so ignorant. I feel like racism is not payed enough attention to. It is not recognized enough especially because people still chose to vote for our current president, who happens to be about the biggest racist douche bag ever.
I whole heartedly wish that I was old enough to vote because as much as I chose to not believe it, Trump is our president. Personally I feel as though if you voted for Trump you support racism because that is one of the main things he is known for. I can not begin to imagine what other people go through when encountering racism because the little bit I encountered I could not handle. This world already being a terrible place with so many flaws now has a President that is actually managing to make it worse. All in all racism is something I am strongly against however I feel that no matter how much we try it will still occur and continue to ruin the world we live in.
Twitter is a big place to see everything wrong in the world. It shows the hardcore truth about situations you didn’t even know existed. There are 50 states in America and millions of people living in each. Everyone or at least the majority of us have twitter and other social medias and it keeps us connected. Now and days when I scroll down my feed I see at least 4 racial accusations. I believe that racism is a big topic that goes on in the world and it’s terribly wrong. For me personally I don’t see it happening in oakcrest, but that’s just one location vs the whole world. In America we are called “The United States” for a reason, but are our states really united if people act like this. Our own police officers not doing their job and just arresting black people on the spot? Slavery ended in 1865 but yet the modern American people still want to judge a person by their skin color. This isn’t a situation one or two people can just change. In fact it might never completely change…. Until we get a new president. But anyways racism is a big portion of what’s wrong with the world and sadly it is not prohibited to people where it needs to be.
ReplyDeleteThe world is a crazy place...right? That’s what people say, that’s the general assumption in our everyday lives when something happens. When we scroll through Instagram, and see kids around the age of 10 cursing up a storm, when our president acts like he has no sense at all, and his administration is filled with so much controversy, when are cities are filled with endless crime, and there is endless hate, and how there are threats of nuclear bombs looming around the world. What is wrong with this world, and the answer to that question is almost everything is wrong. On a macro level so many things are wrong and there is no good. On a micro level you’ll notice small acts of humanity encompassed by malice. What’s wrong in the world is that there is no true equality. There is nothing equal about a world we’re people are rich just because they inherited money from their families. There is no equality were racism is still prevalent in our society. Racism is disgusting in every shape, and form. If your are racist you do not deserve to be in this world, and should rot in hell. Racism defeats the purpose of humanity, and is the first step to changing the world. Stereotypes are a problem to, but can only be fixed when you ask yourself why? Why is it that when a black person is being smart, they are known as acting white, or an “oreo”. It’s ignorance, racism, and stereotypes that fuel the popularization of these ideas. I also believe to remove these stereotypes it’s up to the people of those races to step up, and stop acting foolish. I believe ignorance, and lack of intelligence contribute to what’s wrong with the world. Why do people look down on other races subconsciously. It’s because they think they're better than them, and they’ve been subconsciously or outwardly taught to think that way. By looking at races, and seeing them in poor living situation, and because their poor there’s a good chance there uneducated, and that results in crime. So when you look at these races you think to yourself how barbaric they are, and that you are nothing like that, yet when your ancestors are the reason for this happening. People say oh we need to forget the past, and stop with guilt, but as long as you subconsciously think these thoughts your should always feel guilty. President Donald Trump is the embodiment of any caucasian who struggles with their subconscious feelings of racism, or if they are a minority that has felt oppression form caucasian’s in the past, but is too ignorant to see the truth. Immediately after a black president is elected, a man of utter disgustingness becomes the next president. He is a perfect example of everything that’s wrong with world. Anyone who is born before the year 2000, I believe is a problem to this world. When time passes and anyone born before 2000 is dead, we will be left with a more tolerant society, but those subconscious feeling of racism have most likely been passed down. President trump should've never been a thing. Peoples favorite argument is that he speaks the truth. Yes he does speak the truth, the truth for about half of America. There is no fix to this world, you can try all your want, but it will never happen. Things will get better, but different problems will arise over time. If you believe in God then he is the only fix, when you go to heaven your time on this hellish planet is over. If you don’t believe in God then your time on the planet will feel never ending, with nothing to hope for at the end in my opinion. There are more things wrong in our society, but the root was equality. I’m no Angel, I suffer from things such as greed, being egotistical, and judge mental, but I accept who I am, and try to be better every day. Being in denial, and ignorant will be the death of this world.
ReplyDeleteSexism to many American’s doesn't exist or isn’t a priority. While some are in disbelief others feel women should be grateful after all we are allowed to vote thanks to the nineteenth amendment which was enacted on the twelfth of August in nineteen- twenty. Don’t get me wrong I am so thankful that when I turn eighteen I will be given the opportunity to vote. I also understand how I am fortunate to be able to be educated sense in many other countries I wouldn’t get the opportunity though that doesn't mean sexism doesn't exist in our country. For starters it is statistically proven that if a man and women had the same job title/experience that the women would earn eighty sense to every dollar a man would make. Another example of sexism is school dress code. If you were to look at a school's dress code there tends to be more rules on the girls side then on the boys side. I remember the while I was in Davies we weren't allowed to wear tank tops because it would distract the boys. Well i'm sorry in my opinion shoulders aren't attractive and also boys need to learn not to be creeps. To me it’s not about that twenty percent in pay I could lose or that i'm not allowed to wear tank tops to school I mean let's face it it's freezing in school though it's just the fact that women aren't seen equal to men. Our country might have been a man's world at one time but it's time to change and have equality not only in the workforce though in respect.
ReplyDeleteThe world can use more acceptance and open-mindedness. This covers racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. If people were more accepting towards each other, nothing listed above would exist. We don’t go a day without a display of racism or sexism being a headline, whether it be from close minded citizens or our close minded president. Just think about it, in November when it came time to vote for our next president, Donald Trump won. A man who has a history of being racist and is on film saying a very inappropriate phrase that degraded women as a whole. I’m not insinuating that everyone that voted for this man is sexist or racist, but it is disappointing that the pure fact of knowing he is this way didn’t stop nearly 63 million from voting for him.
ReplyDeleteBecause of racism, individuals are being pulled over for no reason.Because of racism, individuals are being killed for the color of their skin. Why would anyone wish this on a human being?
Because of sexism, women only make 20% less than men on average for the same exact job. Because of sexism, women are afraid to speak their mind for fear of being shut down before they open their mouths. Why would anyone wish this on a human being?
Because of homophobia, people are hesitant to share their sexuality. Because of homophobia, people are ending their lives. Why would anyone wish this on a human being?
This is why we need to fight for equality. Just imagine the amount of lives we could save. We need more acceptance for each others race, sex, religion, sexuality, etc. That’s one thing I wish was different about the world.
What is wrong with the world? Imagine how many times the average person says that a day. Probably when they have to change the channel from the nightly news because the horrors that occur in our world become too much to sit through. Or after you live in or through those horrors. My mom says the world is coming to an end. It’s only a matter of time, with all of the natural disasters, looming threats of nuclear attacks, and general evil that is slowly spreading its heinous cancer throughout our nation and world. We will destroy ourselves and the world along with it or the Earth will finally reclaim itself from our poison.
ReplyDeleteJust close your eyes and picture a world without selfishness. What is it like? Now envision that world with love. Where every man, woman, and child looked unto one another as an equal. Where before taking action against one another, or to say this person doesn’t belong here, or to say you are inferior to me, or to say or do whatever people typically say/do negatively, they put themselves in that person’s place. Where each person loved their neighbor as they love themselves, no matter if they are different or exactly the same. How does that world compare to the one we live in? Would you rather be there or to stay here? Why shouldn’t we make our current world that way, or at least make the first steps to eventually allow our descendants to experience that world.
Here’s food for thought, why is it that when a person spreads peace, love, equality, and positivity they are put on this pedestal as an icon? How come the everyday person can’t be like that? Why isn’t that a social and moral norm? I understand that nothing is perfect. I can comprehend that there will always be a disagreement, dislike, or conflict between two people or groups of people over some odd thing or another. What doesn’t make sense is that when something like that occurs, most feel the need to be brash or violent. Just because you don’t like or agree with something, that doesn’t mean you have to bash it. Simply be respectful and try to avoid it if it’s so difficult to come to terms with it. Why is that so hard for people?
At the very heart of it all, I feel that selfishness and lack of love/respect are what is destroying our world. That is the reason we are destroying each other and the planet we live on. We refuse to respect, learn about, or possibly adopt other cultures, ways of life, and beliefs that are different than our own because everyone wants to live in a little box that is their world. We refuse to relinquish our comfort and complacency in order to grow as a human race in the long run. In our very own ignorance and lack of toleration, we will kill ourselves.

ReplyDeleteThere is so much wrong with the world today, all things considered I don’t really think a perfect world will ever exist. There are many issues when it comes to things like the homeless, poverty, politics, wars, issues that I don’t feel I’m educated enough about to really have an opinion, however I still recognize that they’re there.
ReplyDeleteIf there is one thing I feel I can most definitely talk about, it’s acceptance. It’s a very different world today than it was when my parents grew up. There are so many adults that were raised with such blindsided views on life. My parents generation (or at least the middle class white people) were kinda awful when it came to accepting other people. If you were a girl from a white, middle class, catholic family, you married into another white, middle class, catholic family. If you told your parents you were gay or you’re boyfriend was black, you would have a major issue with your parents, but this didn’t happen because people just didn’t color outside of the lines as often as they do in 2017. But that was then, today people are more willing to accept people of different race, religion, culture, sexual preference, class, and honestly I think it’s a beautiful thing to be surrounded by people who come from somewhere much different than you, it makes you appreciate people in general in a whole new level. When you don’t care about any of the aforementioned categories you become a better person. However unfortunately, there are still people who are homophobic or who don’t believe in a biracial relationship, and just have such old school views and it’s just so sickening I me that even in 2017 we care so much about what others are doing. There are kids that have to hid things from there parents because they are afraid they will be disowned and that just isn’t right.
Now switching to a new topic, I was in New York City one day and this is what I saw: women begging on street corners with their children, yet 100 feet away there’s a Barney’s where the rich frivolously spend their trust funds, while another man is scrapping together change to afford a McDonald’s burger because it’s the first meal he’s had in a week that he didn’t retrieve from the dumpster. I was in the city one day just observing this mix between the worlds highest and lowest classes and it made my heart sink to my stomach, it just seemed like nobody cared about anyone struggling.
But then again there are people who sleep on a park bench a night simply because that is the fait they choose for themselves when they dropped out of school, or they spent more time on drugs than they did bettering themselves. Regardless poverty has always been an issue in the world.
In the end of the day all I can really say is the world sucks. I can’t control how other people live their lives but I can control my life, and how I will one day raise my kids.
What I think is wrong with the world right now is many, many things. First there's the issue with Kim Jong-un and our president Donald J Trump about nuclear warfare with numerous countries that has been going on for months now. Also the issue between Trump’s comments on the NFl players taking a knee during the national anthem, which has caused major controversy on both sides of the matter. The conflict between police, and you know what I am going to say, African Americans. The problem with global warming causing hurricanes in the Atlantic to become bigger every year as seen in Harvey and Irma. And terrorist attacks all across the world in numerous countries involving bombings and shootings. These are all very serious things some more harmful than others, what needs to be changed about these issues is first in my opinion, strike North Korea before they strike first. The reason I say this is because they have been gaining power and finding new ways to launch missiles NUCLEAR missiles farther than before and more powerful than before for the past couple of years. I know we have been sanctioning them and making their economy struggle even more, but that obviously is not working and they still continue to practice firing missiles and they even threatened to attack Guam and sent missiles in the direction of South Korea and China. The matter with Trump and the NFl is to tell Trump to open his eyes and stop being a kid and see why Colin Kaepernick the man who started this, sat then eventually took a knee during the national anthem. The topic on police brutality which has been pretty quiet compared to the last 2-3 years where it seemed to happen almost every single day. What could be fixed with this matter on police side is, to evaluate all of their current employee’s and see if they really are fit for the job and won’t pull the trigger for no reason and unload the clip on an innocent citizen just because they are a darker skin color and you don’t seem to like them. For the African Americans and everyone else involved keep doing your thing. Peaceful protests, obeying the system when asked and not bending any rules and being respectful to the police officer that could take your life away in an instant and get away with it. The global warming issue I don’t have much to say honestly we all know what we have to do to stop it. However this problem takes time to resolve, since it’s dealing with the planet we live on, we can’t deplete the amount of carbon emissions released in the air in minutes. Although if we keep conserving, recycling and taking care of what we live on, our children will have a better place to live in than what we live on now at this moment. The last subject is terrorism it’s a very harsh thing to deal with, because thousands have passed from the deadly and horrendous attack from several terrorist groups mainly in parts of Asia and Africa. They just recently attacked London a few weeks ago. Furthermore what I would do to stop it is nothing honestly besides what we are doing now. The reason I say this is because it can happen at any moment you never know until it strikes, and yeah we had lucky saves when we caught the terrible act in motion just a few spare moments leading to what could be another disaster, but other than that just be thankful that they don’t occur as often and that you get to live another day on this beautiful place we call Earth.
ReplyDeleteThere are many problems with our society -- racism, violence, drugs, technology.. in short a lack of humanity. There is a lack of respect, empathy, and acceptance/appreciation for our differences.
ReplyDeleteRacism seems to be more prevent than ever before. People who you thought were cool are now showing their true colors. When I was younger, you didn't see the color of a person's skin. I had friends of all races and we liked each other for who we were. Today, some people pass judgement, not based on your character but based on the color of your skin. Some people feel they can say negative things about a group of people, and there are no consequences. Historically, people of different races came to the US in hopes of a better life. Now, these same groups are being banned from entering the country. Where is the compassion and empathy to help others that helped create this country?
Another issue with society is the rise in violence. Brutality and bullying is on the rise and technology and the media is fueling the fire. I am so tired of watching the news because all you see is shootings, police brutality, and kids being driven to suicide because they can't take the bullying.
We have a major drug epidemic in our society too. If seems like more than ever, many young people are doing drugs and alcohol, some to be cool and others to cope with the stresses of life. Young people see it on TV and social media, and think its okay. Little do they realize how much it is destroying their lives and the lives of the people around them.
Finally, technology has had a negative impact on our society from the standpoint that it has destroyed interpersonal relationships. People don't know how to talk to one another, to have a conversation. Communication has turned into a tweet, snap or instagram post. Now I enjoy using social media, but some people are so into it that they forgot how to communicate!
My mom used to tell me how it was when she was growing up. Since many parents had to work to make ends meet, the “village” helped to raise the kids. There was respect for parents, respect for elders and respect for oneself. Nowadays, you are lucky if you even see your neighbors.
The political leaders today are NOT helping our society. The tweets, the rallys, the negative talk is making this country more divisive than ever before. Because our top political leaders say whatever they want, the rest of the country feels that it is okay to follow down that same path. People have lost respect for one another, there is no empathy, no compassion, just a lot of tension.
As young people, we are the generation that can change course and get things straight. We have to think with our heads and not get caught up with the emotions that are demonstrated by many adults. Maybe we are the ones that need to set the example for our parents and other adults by showing compassion and empathy to our fellow students. Stop the bullying, stop the drugs, stop the divisive talk and help each other. Less by example. We are ALL EQUAL regardless of our race, gender or religious beliefs.
Looking at Oakcrest as a whole, looking at its faults from the people within it, Oakrest is amazing compared to the world as a whole. I believe that so many of the world's problems come from ignorance and people still being so close minded. I feel like racism, sexism, homophobia, and bigotry as a whole would be so much less prevalent than it is now of people just try to understand other people instead of assuming things about them because of their race or beliefs. Racism, especially today, is such a grand topic because it's always been a problem. I never noticed it until somewhat recently. I always thought that it wasn't a huge problem anymore now that there's no more slavery or segregation, I never noticed the actuality of it. Growing up with half of my family being black, I never believed there was anything wrong with black people. Too many children haven't been taught to view all people as equals and have instead been taught that anyone different than the heterosexual white man had something wrong with them and should be treated accordingly. This lead and will continue to lead to the necessity of the Black Lives Matter movement and others like it. Because these children weren't taught differently, they assumed all of these other, different people weren't worth anything therefore, thousands upon thousands of these different people are killed. I try, even now when I don't have much influence on people, I try to express my opinions and reasons for having them. I feel like if people listen to me and actually take into consideration what I'm saying, they'll agree with me because I'm a reasonable person. I am going to try to persuade as many people as I can to be more open minded and not assume someone's going to attack you because they're black or are wearing a hijab. I am planning on making some sort of change, even if it's microscopic, I will make some kind of change towards helping more people become accepted and less people grow up to be bigots.
ReplyDeleteI think racism is a huge issue plaguing our society. It's 2017 and yet it's still a major issue. Especially now that people feel safe expressing those disgusting beliefs because of our new president. They see the racist and misogynistic things he says and does and they feel as if it is their time to come out and expose their ugly colors.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting people from all corners of hell have come out. The Neo Nazi's in Charlottesville, the KKK, and numerous other white supremacist groups are running rampant.
People need to wake up and realize we are all the same. We all bleed red and we all have the ability to do great things. People should not be attacked by law enforcement because of the color of their skin. People should not be searched at airports because of their religion. People should not be stereotyped because of what ethnicity they belong. Society should be helping each other out, not putting each other down.
I have encountered racism towards me many times in my life and I know how it feels. The frustration and anger is immense and it is very hard to not body-slam the person saying such racist and ignorant things. So I never judge a person on the color of their skin or their beliefs. I love people and I embrace people of all races with open arms. If everyone just saw each other as equals and embraced everyone the world would be a much better place.
