Did YOU Know?

The original version of following video was released approximately 12 years ago, and when it was, my then-AP Lang class had to watch, think and respond to it in a very Lang-like way. I mean, like, by exaining the rhetorical strategies the video used, the appeals, etc.
I was super lame back then, because by assigning this as work, I negated some of the power of just absorbing the information.  Live and learn, I guess.
In any case, the more enlightened version of me now realizes  that there is more to be gained if I have you watch it, and then respond as you fit.  Your ideas, opinions, criticisms etc.
That is, are you shocked? Did it change anything about how you view the world and the ever-changing landscape of technology and innovation?  Is this old news?

Lastly, below the link to the newest video is the original--the one I used in Lang all those years ago. The soundtrack and statistics are different, and that alone is worth watching both videos because it gives you a tangible sense of how quickly times change, just in the time that YOU have been on the planet.
Watch, learn, and be amazed, entertained or at last occupied by your own statistical histories.

  1. Why are Indians having so many babies???? I like how they both have pretty much the same information, with just a few added and a few changed in the latest version. The latest version has a lot more movement and colors, and it also has pictures, which makes it interesting. The first one was pretty slow and way too calm, it made it feel like it lasted an eternity. The information didn't seem as interesting in the older one, either, I guess? The words would just appear, then fade away, then more would appear, then they'd fade away, and so on and so on. The newest one is up to date, too, of course, so that's that part ot include. They do have one thing in common completely: they both make it very depressing and make me feel horrible about myself and this country ;-;

  2. All I kept thinking was “wow” and “holy crap”. The population statistics didn’t really phase me because I already knew that India and China have an outrageous amount of people, but the technological part of the video had me pretty stunned. The fact that someone could invent a machine smarter than themselves is mind boggling in an almost uncomfortable way, not to mention the amount of information our brains can hold along with how much new information is created yearly. It’s crazy to think that what we can learn in a week would overwhelm someone from the 1800s if they learned it in a lifetime. Just by reading the newspaper, we’ve exceeded the knowledge of our ancestors.
It surprised me when the video said that some jobs we have today didn’t exist a decade ago. Especially going into college and trying to look for what I want to make a career out of, this makes the possibilities seem endless. So while it gives me hope, there’s also a bit of anxiety and being overwhelmed thinking about it all because there are so many options, picking one seems nearly impossible.
I really do find it crazy how much the world changes; Almost as if it’s going TOO fast. If I learn something freshman year of college, I don’t want to have to relearn the “now correct” information two years later. But maybe all of this is for the better. Maybe medical discoveries are being improved, that would be nice.
Overall the video brought to light just how much things change and how much “shift happens”.

  3. It’s crazy to know how rapid the growth of technology is. I don’t think of it everyday or even realize how vast this era is until watching and comparing these two videos. Just 13 years ago Myspace was popular, Ipods were just getting on the market, and technology was just starting to reach our fingertips. Our generation is known as the “Igeneration” , so we were fortunate enough to experience the grown of technology right in front of our faces. If you compare the 2006 video to the 2018 one you can tell that technology improved by just looking at the graphics. In 2006 there wasn’t much animation to be done, but by 2018 it was like watching a mini movie. There was so much improvement it was a little overwhelming to me just looking at it. Also the statistics changed dramatically in the time period. For example, google searches jumped from 2.7 billion per month to 31 billion. That jump is so jurassic because of all the new technology that was formed in between. We now how faster computers, Tablets,Phones, smart watches, even amazon Alexa which is just a faster more innovative google.
This also makes me wonder what the future really holds. Yeah the videos had some predictions, but no one really knows what’s to come.

  4. Throughout this video I just kept thinking “wow..”. I was shocked by some of the population and technological facts. Like, it’s crazy to think that we were born in a time where flip phones were new and in. Then 16 years later we have smart phones that can detect your face to unlock it, our phones and speakers talk back to us and not to mention we have freaking robots..! The world is changing so fast and new advancements are coming upon us. Something that really caught my attention was how in 2006 Myspace was visited an average of 30 times a day and now in 2018, if it was a country, Facebook could be ranked top 3 most populated contry. That is crazy. Along with the fact that we have beat our ancestors academically and we hold more knowledge reading the Sunday paper than they ever had in their lifetime. To me, these videos were mind blowing and also scary. It's scary to think about how much is changing in front of us and to think that our futures are literally unpredictable. What will happen in the next 15 years? Flying cars? We have no idea. These videos really made my brain do a backflip.

  5. Lots of interesting make-you-think facts were presented in both videos. I think it’s absolutely crazy that, just over a decade ago, most people had to pay a certain amount of money for every text message they sent and every text message they received and today, the number of text messages sent and received everyday, exceeds the total population of the planet. The two videos shifted from MySpace being considered its own “planet” to FaceBook being the 3rd most populated “planet” in the world, also mentioning that there are about 600 tweets tweeted every SECOND. These facts alone prove that shift happens. Technology definitely underwent a rapid growth and is STILL growing, which is kind of scary. So much happened in just a little over a decade, who knows what’s next?

  6. It’s mind-boggling to me how different American society was in terms of technology just 12 years ago. Looking back, even just the video editing of the 2006 video is amateur compared to the 2018 version which utilizes many different advanced computer graphic and editing skills. Whereas the 2006 video looks like a high school slideshow. Our cameras and editing equipment have improved so much throughout my lifetime without me even realizing its happening. I think it’s crazy that MySpace was the big social network back then yet nowadays it’s a graveyard. I was also astonished by how huge our population is let alone the size of China’s. Some of this information actually scared me.What happens when the earth is overpopulated, or when computers take over everything more than they already have? I guess these questions are ones I may get to answer for myself one day.

  7. With both videos through out all I could think was wow. Wow, because there are so many things about the world that I didn't know about. Kind of makes me think how much I care and only think about the US. I really forgot how popular myspace was. It was so popular that it could have been the 11th most populated country. In the most recent on it talked so much about technology because its all we know and talk about right now. It really is crazy how there soon will be a computer that will be smarter than human beings. Speaking of smarter, India has more honors students then we have students. That one really messed me up and also makes the US look pretty dumb. I kind of forgot how smart people can be. Also India is really into the whole baby making thing. That is a whole lot of children. It makes me wonder how they have enough food and space for all the new children. There is so much I don't know and this makes me question my life .

  8. Honestly I may sound dumb but, I did not know that India had that large of a population to be exceeding the united states by that much in so many different categories. I knew obviously China had a large population but it was shocking for me to come to find out India was even larger. I knew that technology was rapidly increasing over the years and in the future will exceed everyones knowledge. I guess for me just seeing all these facts being presented to me that I never would have really thought about otherwise was interesting for me. Some stuff is common sense but other things I was genuinely surprised because I had never known those things. Social Media is used way more than I thought, texting has completely replaced talking, and Google has replaced text books. Its just crazy for me to think of my parents growing up without the modern technology my life basically revolves around. After watching the video I am a little scared that technology is going to take over the world and I don't know what is going to be left for us to do that technology can't already do for us.

  9. I'm more impressed than shocked. The improvements made and sheer magnitude of technology and how it affects human life is nothing to be surprised about anymore.. that doesn’t make it any less awesome however. Some of the facts in the 2018 video I have heard or seen before but bringing it back to the forefront of my mind still makes me stop and think for a moment. The quick growth of tech is crazy to think about because 10 or 15 years ago the items most people have or interact with daily were nothing more than a small seed in the back of some person’s head. And each day there are thousands of more ideas that may be what completely changes the lives of millions as the smartphone did a little over a decade ago. With the global population growing each day, there are that many more great minds that yearn to explore and make revolutionary creations. One innovative thought or action could completely change the course of society and education.

  10. The rate In which the world is changing, growing and developing is mind- boggling and scary. One statistic that stuck out to me is that by my third year of college my first years knowledge would be considered out dated. I don’t know about anyone else but to me that sounds scary see education and jobs are changing so rapidly I fear that I might not be able to get a good job because I won’t be qualified when I get out of college. Also who knew that there were so many babies born in four minutes and that was just in three individual countries think about how many are born in the whole world. These videos definitely changed my view they kinda scared the shit out of me if I’m being honest I fear thing like when I get older is there going to be enough resources such as food and water for everyone also what’s the job economy going to be like. But it also excites me I wonder what social media will become is Facebook still going to be number one? Is google going to be out run by another company? Is Apple going to be the number one tech. Company? So many exciting questions and inventions that are to come and I can’t wait. Also is anyone else just a little curious if soon were going to be able to fly by spaceship or is that just me. When I look at this video and thought about it for longer than the fact that it scared me also made me excited to see what comes next but a little apprehensive to.

  11. The video clearly demonstrated how technology has grown over the last 12 years. Our generation has grown up during this time period and have benefited from the technology many advancements. Sometimes I wonder if things are moving too fast, instead of writing a letter or making a phone call, we text or snap. We are always looking for the latest version of new technology which is why sales of Apple products are up so much as shown in the video. The job turnover rate was also really high. The average person will have 10-14 jobs by the time they were 38. THAT IS LEGIT SO CRAZY! Where is the loyalty or commitment to a job? You spend so much of your life in school and pay a lot of money for college, just to change jobs every few years.
I was amazed by the population comparison of the US to other countries. The births in these countries are 3 to 4 times higher than the US. But I was even more surprised at how far advanced the countries are from a student education standpoint compared to the US. While the US spends a lot of money on technology and education, we fall far behind China and India. Why are these countries so far advanced when we have more resources and opportunities available to US students?
The video has shown me how things have grown so much right in front of our eyes over time; the number of Facebook users, texts, Google searches, devices. It is really an eye opener and amazing how things have advanced. But all of this may be too much too soon.

  12. The world is getting so big and so vast, and social media is the outlet that brings us all together, and it also divides us. To be able to build a computer smarter than the human species concerns me. No artificial computer should be able to match the power of our brains, that is something sacred. China will soon rule the world, it holds so much power economically, has a large population it can put to its military and work, and is becoming such an intelligent nation. I think I’ the future China will be the superpower of the world. I think will soon be like one of those black mirror episodes we’re technology controls too much of our lives, and ruins what it feels like to be an actual human. Hopefully I’m dead before then.

  13. The facts in the video really do open your eyes on how big the world is and how far we have come. Some of the facts I already knew and some were not as surprising as I thought I don’t know some of them just didn’t phase me. But when it said something about 600 babies being born in India by the time the video ends. What did scare me was how fast information was being made. Like how the information you would be learning your first year of college would probably be outdated by your third year. I wouldn’t want to waste my time learning something that will soon become outdated. It will be hard enough for us to get jobs when we finish college or graduate school. I’m afraid of being caught in our capitalism’s trap of just working to pay off your education and to pay for things you need just to go to a job that you didn’t want in the first place.
I knew China was very advanced and prosperous but I did not know they were so much better off than the U.S. it proves how much we needy I improve our focus on education. They are more honor in China students in the entire United States.
We need to focus more on educating the students so we will have a brighter future.

  14. After watching both videos I am a little shocked and amazed but, i'm more astonished about the facts about what can go on in 5 minutes or what is going to happen in the next few years or decades it’s amazing on how they can predict this stuff that is years ahead.

Although some of this was a refresher since I heard or saw some of these facts before, however the ones that were new to me changed my view a little bit because i'm just astonished on just how fast we have advanced as a society since the first video in 2006 and all the technological advances that have been made.

Some of this was old news but most of it was new to be because i really didn’t need those facts in my life or just disregarded it which is why when I see them again i’m like oh that’s interesting.

  15. These videos made me realize that we grow more in technological ways than in socially progressive ways. I feel like I’m not shocked about these statistics and that people are so consumed with technology that it will grow exponentially, as will people unless something drastic makes half the world sterile. Logically it makes sense and statistics don’t need to be present for most people to assume the number is large. I feel like it’s old news, like we know things evolve and change and grow and it doesn’t matter how to most people as long as they can keep up with it. I feel like I should have more of an opinion but statistics don’t really wow me. I understand that the world if full of people with phones in their faces and etc etc. I just wish people would be more willing to put those phones down and talk to one another. No matter how much technology people have nothing makes people understand other people better than them interacting with those people.
